Week 4 - Plato & Aquinas

Q 1. please read the selections of Plato’s Republic that run from pages 108 – 116, titled “What is the value of justice?” 2. please read St. Thomas Aquinas, “The Natural Law,” pp. 95-101 You can choose to write on Plato, Aquinas, or both. You don’t need to write on both but you do need to read both. These are two interesting texts that often lead to great class discussions. +Questions for consideration (Plato): • What do you make of Thrasymachus’ claim that “might is right” ? Would you actively prescribe such a notion ? What are the three types of good ? Do these make sense ? Can you think of additional examples that either fit this schema or, more interestingly, break it ? Do you agree with this overall analysis ? What is your assessment of where Socrates locates *justice* within the three types of good ? • What do you make of Glaucon’s arguments ? I think there is more substantial weight there than most people presume on a first reading. • How do you understand and assess the conversation between Glaucon and Socrates ? • Outside of Plato and this text, what do YOU think justice is ? How would you define it? Is an ahistorical theoretical concept of justice legitimate ? • What would you do if you had the Ring of Gyges and rendered yourself invisible ? You don’t need to talk about this in the post, but we are going to ttalk about this in class, as I mentioned this week.
